A trip to San Diego means easy access to international travel with the Mexican border just 17 miles from downtown.
Once in Baja, in a two-hour radius from San Diego, you’ll discover urban culture, beach communities and a bucolic countryside. The main nearby cities are Tijuana, a bustling urban center characterized by its historic markets, unique art galleries, and emerging Baja-Med cuisine; Rosarito, a resort community known for its fantastic lobster, warm hospitality, beautiful beaches and desert hills; and Ensenada, a picturesque port city boasting a cruise ship terminal, fishing boat fleets, a busy downtown district lined with shops, seafood carts and cantinas, as well as the famous Valle de Guadalupe wine region located just outside of Ensenada.
Less than 20 minutes from the city of San Diego, Tijuana Mexico is the gateway to the tourist corridor of Baja California. Recognized as one of the world's most visited cities, with more than 40 million border crossings each year, Tijuana is an energetic hub of activity day and night. The community offers duty-free shopping, authentic Mexican cuisine, a tremendous arts and culture scene—highlighted by the Tijuana Cultural Center Avenida Revolution, exciting sporting events, glittering nightlife and more. For travelers looking for an alternative arrival or departure option, the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) terminal, a pedestrian skywalk bridge connecting the Tijuana International Airport to San Diego, makes both domestic and International travel to the region quite easy.
Located south along the coast, Rosarito is a young resort community known for its beaches, oceanfront hotels, aquatic adventures, shopping, seafood dining and nightlife. . After a day browsing Rosarito’s ceramics, curios, leather goods, baskets, clothing, and jewelry shops, indulge at one of Rosarito's many fine restaurants, featuring Mexican seafood, Chinese and a variety of other cuisines. Just south of Rosarito, in Puerto Nuevo is the famous "Lobster Village," known for the tasty crustaceans.
Located approximately 70 miles south of the international border, Ensenada is an easy 90-minute drive from San Diego along a scenic toll highway, noted for its breathtaking ocean vistas, coastal cliffs and viewpoints. Known as one of the leading resort and commercial centers on the Baja peninsula, Ensenada also boasts a protected harbor with modern port facilities—home to visiting cruise ships and a large sportfishing fleet. Be sure to explore the Mercado Negro fish market, local taco shops, seafood carts, craft beer breweries, mescal and margarita bars, museums and more.
Just outside of Ensenada you’ll find the Valle De Guadalupe. Considered the Napa Valley of Mexico, Valle de Guadalupe produces 90% of Mexico’s wine, and enchants as a paradise for wine aficionados. There are more than 100 wineries to explore ranging from artisan and boutique winemakers to large and small commercial vineyards. In addition to offering tours and wine tastings, some of the wineries are also home to outstanding restaurants, serving gourmet farm-fresh cuisine and local seafood.
