Our mission is to advance literacy, creativity and communication by empowering individuals to voice their stories through playwriting programs and theatre productions.
Founded by Deborah Salzer in 1985, Playwrights Project reaches over 8, 000 people annually.
Our Programs Include
- Imagine That! - In-school and after-school residencies in creative drama, grades 1-12
- Write On! - Classroom playwriting residencies, grades 4-12
- Out of the Yard - Playwriting residencies for incarcerated individuals
- California Young Playwrights Contest - Playwriting contest open to all Californians under age 19
- Community Readings - Professional actors perform lively readings of scripts from various programs
- Play by Play: Cultivating Emerging Playwrights - One-on-one dramaturgical work and readings of new plays, ages 19+
- Plays by Young Writers - Professional productions of winning contest scripts, for all ages
- Telling Stories: Giving Voice to Foster Youth - Current and former foster youth work with a theatre artist to create scripts about life in foster care
- Lifestages/Recollections/Reflections - Group workshops introducing playwriting techniques to dramatize personal experiences into original scripts, ages 55+
