At 68 years old, the San Diego Junior Theatre is the oldest youth theatre in the United States. SDJT was founded by Craig Noel in 1948 as a children's wing of the prestigious Old Globe Theatre. SDJT now operates as a private, non-profit corporation governed by a dedicated volunteer board of trustees and a professional staff. It is our mission to give all children, regardless of heritage, religion, ability or level of interest, the opportunity to experience the life-enhancing skills which theatre arts afford.
Since becoming its own entity in 1962, the theatre has operated as a year-round educational theatre program, offering over 260 classes each year to youth ages 3-19 in the subjects of acting, voice, dance and specialty topics. SDJT also offers camps and a host of performing opportunities each year.
