San Diego County Credit Union's 8th annual pre-Christmas holiday game, the Poinsettia Bowl, will be played December 20, 2012 at Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley between San Diego State University of the Mountain West Conference (MW) and Brigham Young University of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). This nationally recognized California event features all the pomp and circumstance of a major college post-season football game and will air nationally on ESPN.

Brigham Young University earned their spot in the Poinsettia Bowl with their sixth win of the season in early November. BYU has played in eleven Holiday Bowls, the last one being in 1993. Their overall Holiday Bowl record is 4-6-1.

San Diego State University (SDSU) finished 7-1 in the Mountain West en route to earning a share of the league title, its first since 1998. SDSU appeared in the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl, where they beat the Navy Midshipmen 35-14 in front of 48,049 fans, the largest crowd in the seven-year history of the game.

Last year's 2011 Poinsettia Bowl featured a 31-24 Texas Christian University (TCU) victory over Louisiana Tech. The MW boasts a 6-1 win record during the games' six years in existence. Future Poinsettia Bowl opponents for the MW include Army in 2013. Negotiations are also in the works to bring the Navy Midshipmen back to San Diego for the 2014 game.

The Poinsettia Bowl festivities kick off in downtown San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18 with the Five Star Tours Poinsettia Bowl Gaslamp March. Marching bands and spirit squads from SDSU and BYU will parade from each end of Fifth Avenue at E Street and K Street, performing fight songs and jolly holiday favorites, leading up to the crescendo at Market Street with a heart-pounding marching band exhibition and battle of the bands.

Visit San Diego this year for the football game and enjoy the many holiday festivities throughout the city. Tour the neighborhood light displays or drive through Del Mar’s Holiday of Lights. Take in the theater and dine at San Diego’s finest restaurants. San Diego's mild California climate allows for many types of activities including Balboa Park’s December Nights. We are not saying don’t bring an umbrella; because there is an occasional rain shower, however, we never let it dampen our spirits!
