The Japanese Friendship Garden is proud to welcome Tokushirou Tamane, highly respected Head Gardener at Kinkakuji Temple (Temple of the Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto, to the Garden for an Aesthetic Pruning and Rock Placement Workshop.

Workshop participants will observe Mr. Tamane arranging stones at the new water feature in the long awaited canyon expansion of the Garden and will receive hands-on instruction in rock placement and pruning. Mr. Tamane is handing down his traditional knowledge and encouraging others to teach and pass on their knolwedge to the next generation of gardeners.

Participants should bring gloves, pruning tools, hate, comfortable clothes, workshoes, and a notepad.

Saturday, June 29

  • 1:00 to 4:00 PM - Observation of rock arrangement for Upper Stream and Waterfall
  • 6:00 PM - Reception for Tokushirou Tamane (optional)

Sunday, June 30

  • 8:00 to 9:00 AM - Lecture & Discussion on rock arrangement & pruning (by Takeo Uesugi and Tokushirou Tamane)
  • 9:10 to 11:30 AM - Rock Arrangement Aorkshop (Translation by Keiji Uesugi)
  • 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM - Lunch provided by JFG
  • 12:30 to 4:00 PM - Pruning Workshop
