Step back in time to the turn of the century for a festive concert at the Davis-Horton House in downtown San Diego! Cinballera Entertainment and the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation are collaborating to present “Two Sisters from San Diego: Parlor Songs, Ballet, and Nostalgia at San Diego’s Oldest House,” an intimate parlor concert in downtown San Diego’s oldest building.
Cinballera Entertainment is an emerging classical arts company in San Diego County which presents unique programs combining opera, ballet, and classic film inspiration at historic venues. Started by sisters Tiffany and Rebekah Brannan this June, Cinballera presented two full “balloperas” this summer. “Two Sisters from San Diego” is the company’s third show and first concert.
The title is inspired by the 1946 MGM musical “Two Sisters from Boston.” Just like the sisters in the movie, played by Kathryn Grayson and June Allyson, the Brannan sisters invite you to this beautiful house for a musical journey into San Diego’s history. They will be joined by five gentlemen who are fellow opera singers and ballet dancers for duets and pas de deux.
The first half of the program includes songs from operas, operettas, song cycles, and classic movies, in the style of a Victorian parlor concert. Then, guests will have a chance to explore the house before heading to the downstairs gallery for the program’s second half, a few original ballet dances.
Cinballera stands for the company’s three areas of focus, Cinema, Ballet, and Opera; it’s pronounced “cheen-ball-era” to reflect opera’s Italian background. Cinballera performances blend opera and ballet with inspiration from classic movies. All our productions are staged with the goal of artistic integrity and historical accuracy, staying as close to the original intentions of the creators as possible. Following the example of classic films from the Golden Era of Hollywood, Cinballera productions are staged with subtlety, taste, and decency, so viewers of all ages and backgrounds can come. However, they are not geared exclusively to children; we tell mature, exciting stories in a clean, artistic way.
There will three performances of this show, one on November 18 at 7 PM and two on November 19 at 1 PM and 5 PM. Each show will last around an hour and a half. Only 20 people can attend each of these exclusive events, so reserve your tickets online now! All proceeds will be split between Cinballera and the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation.
This interactive, intimate performance is the perfect way to begin the holiday season on a nostalgic note.
Please note audience will be a mix of standing and sitting for the performances.
