Encounter: Photographs by Jed Fielding

Jed Fielding’s in-your-face street portraiture will take you right into his subjects' vivid lives. Getting in close range, his portraits allows us to feel these intimate interactions, moving beyond traditional photojournalism into personal encounters. His curious subjects reach for each other and for the photographer, too — at times it might feel like they’re reaching for us as well.

In this exhibition, MOPA visitors will see early works by Fielding, in addition to sections focused on his work in Naples, Italy and with blind students in Mexico City.

A publication will accompany the exhibition and be available for sale through MOPA’s store.

Del Mar Racing Season

Jul 20 - Sep 8, 2024

San Diego horse racing takes place where the "turf meets the surf" at the Del Mar Racetrack. Fans flock to the track each summer to wager on their favorite horses during the popular, annual Del Mar Racetrack racing season, mid-July - early-September. Be part of the magic and nostalgia of this long-time horse race tradition dating back to 1937 when Bing Crosby greeted the first guests, and Seabiscuit won by a nose in the infamous race in 1938. This season features the nation's top racehorses, trainers and jockeys, and plenty of fun in the sun.

Egyptology Lecture – Recycling for Death (Zoom)

Oct 10, 2024

Kara Cooney will discuss her latest book, Recycling for Death, a meticulous study of the social, economic, and religious significance of coffin reuse during the Ramesside and early 3rd Intermediate periods. Funerary datasets are the chief source of social history in Egyptology, and the numerous tombs, coffins, Books of the Dead, and mummies of the 20th and 21st Dynasties have not been fully utilized as social documents, mostly because the data of this period is scattered and difficult to synthesize. This lecture is the culmination of 15 years of coffin study, analyzing coffins and other funerary equipment of elites from the 19th to the 22nd Dynasties to provide essential windows into social strategies and adaptations employed during the Bronze Age collapse and subsequent Iron Age reconsolidation.
