Living Room Lecture: Block 112

San Diego's Working Class in the 1880s

Archaeology provides evidence of those who are under-represented in the official version of history. Often times, the recorded account of history is about rich, influential men and wars.  What about the women, children, immigrants, the poor, and the different?

Block 112 in Downtown San Diego reflected the same urban diversity that was typical of large Eastern cities. Of the 50 residents, 16 were white or African American citizens. The other 34 were immigrants and ethnic minorities—Chinese laundrymen, a Mexican mill hand, a French gunsmith, a German day-laborer, a Welsh musician, a Japanese lunch man, and an Irish baker. This presentation reveals clues about their everyday lives, ambitions, and lifestyle.

This event will be held on Zoom.

Californian Tall Ship Adventure.

Feb 8 - ongoing

The Maritime Museum of San Diego invites you to join us for Tall Ship adventure sailing! This is a four-hour adventure history sail aboard the schooner Californian.
The Californian is a replica of a gold rush era revenue cutter and the Official Tall Ship of the State of California.

Arrive early to take in your general admission visit to the entire fleet and exhibits, then set sail!

Join the crew in sailing a traditionally rigged tall ship! Passengers will be invited to haul a line, man the helm and watch the crew as they scamper up and down the rigging to set and furl the sails. Listen as the Californian’s crew relates the history of sailing and exploration in San Diego, tales of whaling and sea otter trade, local sea battles, the art of ship’s gunnery, life at sea and more.

Monty Montgomery: “Intersection”

Mar 23, 2024

Sparks Gallery is pleased to show new work by bi-coastal artist Monty Montgomery in his solo exhibition, “Intersection”.

Profoundly affected by his upbringing in the rural woods of Virginia’s countryside, Monty Montgomery’s work has always been informed by his visceral and emotional reactions to everyday experiences, such as exploring nature, or trekking city streets. His distinctive artistic voice was shaped in his teen years, when he began expressing his perception of the external world in bright geometric abstraction. His characteristic style emerged as a result of distilling sensory input through the lens of urban and natural landscapes. Using color theory, mathematics, and intuition, he attempts to harmonize the collision of these elements into something beautiful and cohesive.

Opening reception on Saturday, March 23, 2024 from 5-8pm
