Cruise into the San Diego Automotive Museum for an experience that will take you on an amazing journey of design, styling, and horsepower! With three extra rotating exhibits per year, the museum offers something for everyone. The signature exhibit on the permanent side of the gallery is Louie Mattar's Fabulous $75,000 Car, the vehicle that still holds the distance endurance record set in 1952. How did he do it? His adaptations of this car are truly amazing! It is complete with a washing machine, a stove, a refrigerator and a shower on the running board. Louie could also change the tires while the car was moving! The museum is also home to one of the finest Indian Motorcycle displays on the West Coast.
Fun For the Entire Family
The museum is family-friendly with lots to do for visitors of all ages. Kids can have fun playing on a stripped down real car and a full-sized motorcycle. The museum accepts exhibits with videos related to the times and topic. The museum also has a strong focus on the people and events that helped shape San Diego history. A classic example is the Old Plank Road that brought travelers almost a hundred years ago across the sand dunes west of Yuma to the up-and-coming city of San Diego.
