As the perfect event for spooky season, and the kick-off of the series, the evening’s feature is The Phantom of the Opera from 1925, the first film adaptation of Gaston Leroux's 1910 horror novel. Lon Chaney’s portrayal of the titular character, a deformed virtuoso haunting the Paris Opera House, has been lauded as one of the greatest performances in horror cinema to date. Upon entering the theater, VIP guests will be treated to an exclusive prelude with organist Russ Peck who will share the history of the theater’s organ and his unique approach to crafting a silent film score that echoes the era in which the films were created.
Attendees of all ages are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and participate in a parade to showcase San Diego’s “Best Dressed.” Children will receive a Balboa Theatre-branded coloring book, while three lucky adults will win raffle prizes from San Diego Theatres Dining and Hospitality Partners.
The screening of The Phantom of the Opera will be accompanied by live organ music, creating an immersive experience that harks back to the silent film era. Following the film, Tonya Mantooth, CEO and Artistic Director of the San Diego International Film Festival, will lead a Post Film Discussion, exploring the film's historical significance and enduring themes.
