Wine Lecture: Save the Last Bullet

Join the Coronado Historical Association for our final Wine & Lecture this Spring, Save the Last Bullet. Heidi Langbein-Allen’s father, Willi Langbein, was thirteen when the Nazis took him away from his parents under the pretense of protecting him. The real reason was to mold him into cannon-fodder for use against the Russian army. Willi was sent to the Eastern Front at age fourteen in the last days of the war to stave off the advance of the Russians. Neither he nor his classmates We expected to return alive from the final battles of the Third Reich.

Having survived the war against all odds, Willi returned home to find everything he knew destroyed. Numb and confused, he was mandated to serve one year of forced farm labor, putting his life on hold.

San Salvador Sailing Adventure Package

Apr 1 - ongoing

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is the only attraction to offer this popular day sail adventure experience aboard San Salvador, a replica of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s ship that arrived at the port we now call San Diego on September 28, 1542. These 4-hour Sailing Adventures are for people who love history and sailing. Few 21st Century people have sailed aboard a 16th Century galleon. You can become one of them. No sailing experience is required. An invaluable addition to your experience is the onboard historian who will explain how the San Salvador was sailed, navigated and defended.

In addition to learning about the exploration of the West Coast, guests can assist the sail crew, enhancing their back-in-time experience.

Your tickets include general admission to visit the Museum fleet of ships and exhibits before your sail!

Egyptology Lecture – Recycling for Death (Zoom)

Oct 10, 2024

Kara Cooney will discuss her latest book, Recycling for Death, a meticulous study of the social, economic, and religious significance of coffin reuse during the Ramesside and early 3rd Intermediate periods. Funerary datasets are the chief source of social history in Egyptology, and the numerous tombs, coffins, Books of the Dead, and mummies of the 20th and 21st Dynasties have not been fully utilized as social documents, mostly because the data of this period is scattered and difficult to synthesize. This lecture is the culmination of 15 years of coffin study, analyzing coffins and other funerary equipment of elites from the 19th to the 22nd Dynasties to provide essential windows into social strategies and adaptations employed during the Bronze Age collapse and subsequent Iron Age reconsolidation.
