For more than 120 years, the Crown Room has been a fixture at The Del. The room is considered an architectural marvel, where the rectangular space is distinguished by its 33-foot-high, self supported, vaulted Oregon sugar pine ceiling. Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum is credited with designing the crown chandeliers that adorn the ceiling.
The Crown Room has enjoyed a distinguished social history. In 1920, an enormous banquet was held here for England’s Prince of Wales, and in 1927 Charles Lindbergh was honored with his own celebration after his successful transatlantic flight. The Crown Room was also the scene for the first state dinner held outside of the White House.
Today, the Crown Room’s tradition of elegance continues as it plays host to an award-winning and spectacular Sunday Brunch. Continuously voted San Diego’s best by, The Del’s brunch has long been a local favorite. Now, Executive Chef John Shelton is pleased to present even more signature delights to choose from.
Seven distinct stations offer something to satisfy every craving. Café American features prepared-to-order omelets, waffles, benedicts and breakfast classics. Farm to Table offers tossed baby greens, gourmet cheeses and charcuterie. Southland Coastal includes a shellfish bar, sushi and king crab. The Classics features hand-carved prime rib and lobster bisque. Crown International prepares individual entrees, local cuisine and dim sum. Finish off this feast with dessert presentations created by Pastry Chef Daphne Higa guaranteed to satisfy the most demanding sweet tooth. The Nothing But Chocolate station offers a chocolate fountain, dark and milk fudge truffle tower and The Del’s famous tiramisu. The Del Pastry Shop serves caramel flan, cobblers, tarts, cakes and more. And, of course, no brunch would be completed without a mimosa, Bloody Mary or freshly squeezed screwdriver.
There’s even a special fun zone where kids can participate in crafts, games and stories. The Crown Room also hosts special brunches for most holidays and special events including Easter, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and more.
