Events
The Annual San Diego Restaurant Week returns April 3 – 10, 2022 with over 90 participating restaurants offering prix-fixe menu options throughout San Diego County. Participating restaurants will offer three-course dinner menus for $20, $30, $40, $50 or $60 per person and/or two-course lunch menus for $10, $15, $20 or $25 per person. The participating restaurants span across the county from the South Bay to the borders of Oceanside and Fallbrook. Tickets are not necessary, but reservations are recommended.
The Without Walls (WOW) Festival by the La Jolla Playhouse will take place April 21 – 24 at in Liberty Station’s Arts District. Like previous WOW Festivals, the 2022 event will feature four action-packed days of theater, dance and music, with more than 20 productions by acclaimed local, national and international artists occurring simultaneously throughout the weekend. A San Diego highly acclaimed performance series, The Wow Festival, takes immersive theater outside the confines of a traditional stage, into unusual or unexpected locations.
From April 22 – 24, the La Jolla Concours D'Elegance returns to La Jolla featuring various types of fine automotive gems. Attendees can view over 125 spectacular one-of-a-kind vehicles displayed on the La Jolla Cove lawn alongside the Pacific Ocean. The event will also feature live music and a Champagne and Honey Tasting Garden.
Mission Fed ArtWalk is back for its 38th year. This free premiere arts and culture event in San Diego’s Little Italy runs from April 30 – May 1, providing attendees an opportunity to meet more than 300 local, national and international artists as well as purchase art directly from the creators. Know as the largest and longest-running arts festival in Southern California, the Mission Fed ArtWalk showcases every medium of art including painting, sculpture, glasswork, photography, fine jewelry and more.
Arts and Culture
The Comic-Con Museum’s newest exhibit, Dave Stevens and the Rocketeer: Art for Arf’ Sake, focuses on the esteemed artist and his greatest artistic creation, The Rocketeer! The exhibit runs until July 31, 2022 and features over 60 pieces of original art and paintings, along with numerous early works by Stevens, as well as animation sketches and cels from cartoons like The Godzilla Power Hour and Spider-Woman and music video storyboards including “Thriller.”
This April the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) is set to debut its long-awaited renovation and expansion of its La Jolla flagship campus. The museum will feature four times the previous gallery space, two levels of light-filled galleries, a public park, and new seaside terraces, allowing visitors the opportunity to both relax and reflect. In addition, guests will be able to enjoy some 200 works of contemporary art with views of the Pacific Ocean serving as an inspiring backdrop. Opening in early summer 2022, The Kitchen @ MCASD will offer seating for up to 120 (inside and out) and robust to-go options.
From April 28 – May 1, 2022, Art Alive, the San Diego Museum of Art’s signature fundraiser, is returning and bringing a kaleidoscope of color and flowers to the Museum. Talented floral designers will fill the galleries with more than 70 floral arrangements inspired by the Museum collection, offering brilliantly colored scenery for a weekend of beloved traditions and art-inspired activities.
The San Diego Botanic Garden will be hosting its second annual spring orchid showcase, World of Orchids, from May 7 – June 12. The Garden will stage the exhibition in its state-of-the-art, 8,000 square foot, glass-enclosed facility – the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory. On select days, the show will feature sales of plants, potting materials, reference guides and other merchandise by vendors, conservation organizations and local orchid societies. Members of SDBG and other gardens participating in the American Horticultural Society's Reciprocal Admissions Program receive free admission. Non-member admissions range from $12 to $18. Entrance to the exhibition includes access to the rest of the Garden’s 37 acres.
Slated to open Friday, May 27, 2022, Expedition Baja at San Diego Natural History Museum invites visitors to explore the Baja California Peninsula and follow researchers on their quest to preserve its wild beauty. Featuring museum specimens, immersive imagery and stories about conservation efforts, Expedition Baja brings to life one of the most incredible regions in the world.
Restaurants, Breweries and Bars
Actor, entertainer, producer and television personality, Nick Cannon opened his new restaurant concept, Wild ‘N Out, this February in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. The “eatertainment” destination features a classic American menu, including chicken sandwiches, burgers and more. The restaurant also serves signature, oversized boozy drinks and offers a variety of sports-themed arcade games for guests to enjoy.
Opened in March 2022, Go Go Amigo at Liberty Station features a Mexican-inspired fare as well as more distinctive fusion items. The menu also includes a selection of tacos, including al pastor, quesabirria, shrimp and pollo asada as well as classic sides and starters, soups and salads, and desserts. To complement the food offerings, Go Go Amigo boasts an expansive list of margaritas, specialty cocktails, beer and wine.
Slated to open in April 2022, Marisi Italiano in La Jolla will feature a menu rooted in regional dishes from the whole of Italy, including handmade pasta and hearth-cooked meats and seafood. The international and highly intense cocktail program features an array of Italian aperitivos, homemade limoncello, rare spirits and an Italian pilsner made specifically for Marisi.
Opening spring 2022, the dynamic team behind The Rose, South Park’s treasured wine bar and bottle shop, is heading to North Park for their next venture. Featuring a menu of Mediterranean by way of California pintxos, also known as small snacks and plates, the new Mabel’s Gone Fishing on 30th Street will dedicate its cocktail list to creative gin and tonics and other gin-based drinks. There will be seasonal entrees, small plates and an oyster bar as well as a happy hour highlighting pintxos.
Grind & Prosper Hospitality is prepping three major openings this season. Opening early May in Oceanside on the roof of the Brick Hotel is the Caribbean-style cocktail bar CoCo Cabana while the ground floor will be anchored by Q&A Restaurant & Oyster Bar, named for Executive Chef Quinnton Austin, who will be cooking up New Orleans cuisine. Set to open late May, Coco Maya by Miss B’s in Little Italy will feature an open-air bar and restaurant that will serve cocktails and a menu from Executive Chef Ricardo Heredia inspired by Latin Caribbean ingredients and flavors.
San Diego’s acclaimed SDCM Restaurant Group will debut an intimate gin-focused cocktail lounge, Captain’s Quarters, adjacent to the group’s The Grass Skirt (a hidden tiki bar) in Pacific Beach spring 2022. The new 1,472 square foot concept will feature curated cocktails highlighting what was once America’s favorite spirit, plus a complementary small-bites menu.
In spring 2022, Carruth Cellars Urban Winery will be among the newest dine and drink options in Liberty Station. The expansive wine garden will serve house-made paninis, salads, plus build-your-own cheese and charcuterie boards to complement Carruth’s award-winning, bold California-style wine, which will be available in flights, glasses and bottles. In addition, Carruth will debut an artisanal cheese counter. Local sourcing partners will include The Aniata Cheese Co and Carlsbad-based Prager Brothers Artisan Breads.
Transportation
San Diego International Airport (SAN) will add year-round non-stop service to Austin, Texas via Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and on Allegiant Air starting April 20, 2022. Flights will operate two times weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
San Diego International Airport (SAN) will add seasonal non-stop service to Sioux Falls, S.D. via Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD) on Allegiant Air starting May 19 and running through August 12, 2022. Flights will operate two times weekly on Thursdays and Sundays.
San Diego International Airport (SAN) will add non-stop service to Oakland, Calif. via Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK) on Spirit Airlines starting May 25, 2022. Flights will operate once daily.
San Diego International Airport (SAN) will add non-stop service to Montréal, Québec, Canada via Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) on Air Canada starting May 20, 2022. Flights will operate three times weekly during the peak summer travel season with arrivals into San Diego on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and departures from San Diego on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
